Who We are

The Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, an indigenous Institute of Diocesan Right, was founded on May 1, 1923, in Uganda by Mother Mary Kevin Kearney, a Franciscan Missionary.

Nature of the Institute

This multi-ethnic institute, rooted in Franciscan spirituality, traces its origins to the Franciscan Sisters of the Five Wounds at St. Mary’s Abbey in London. Mother Kevin, recognized as the Foundress, infused a unique spirituality, intertwining Franciscan principles with her own vision. The sisters embody both Franciscan and missionary identities, extending their reach from Uganda to Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, and the USA

Physical Setting

The Motherhouse is located in Nkokonjeru, within the Catholic Diocese of Lugazi, previously part of the Lubaga Diocese which is now Kampala Archdiocese in Buikwe district, Kyaggwe County, Buganda. This geographical shift reflects the historical and administrative changes over time
