Education Ministry
The role played by the Servant of God Mother Mary Kevin in the education field has tremendously influenced the lives of many. Her passion next to the provision of health care services was to ensure that the chain of poverty is broken among families especially in the rural areas by eliminating ignorance and developing the capacity to widen one’s horizon more so the girl child who was then denied education. Mother Kevin first established special needs education in Uganda. She started the school for the blind in Soroti, Uganda, and adult literacy classes for women and clients at the leprosaria in Nyenga and Buluba. No wonder today the largest ministry in our Institute of the LSOSF is the Ministry of Education. Indeed over 50% of our sisters are involved in the Ministry of Education, including those in the Health Training Institutions and Vocational/Industrial Schools. This is evidenced in the multitude of institutions Mother Kevin established, and the LSOSF has expanded and continued to ensure that learners excel effectively.
Parents in all the said countries struggle to have their children enrolled in the schools run by LSOSF because we use a holistic approach in our institutions. By the time the learners leave our institutions they are prepared to fit in any sphere of life. The sisters strive to reach out compassionately to the marginalized in the spirit of St. Francis and Mother Kevin. Lk4:18-19, Jn 10:10.
Primary and Secondary Schools, post-secondary institutions as well as Vocational Training institutions, Teacher Training Colleges, and Midwifery, and Nurses Training Schools run by LSOSF have highly placed alumnae. In Uganda, the first female doctor in East Africa Josephine Nambooze, the first Flight Engineer, Winnie Byanyima, the first female Vice President in Africa, Specioza Wandera Kazibwe, and many others were from institutions established by Mother Kevin. The consistent success in our schools is attributed to the high values of the fear of God, hard work, commitment and dedication, good morals and discipline instilled to the learners and practiced by staff has enabled students across the three countries to excel year after year.
In order for us to continue with the legacy of our Foundress Servant of God Mother Mary Kevin in the next Century, we must read the signs of times and give our services where they are most needed. Nevertheless, the entire Institute ought to be proud of who we are and what we have accomplished, and what we are able to do for the world today. Much gratitude to the LSOSF for maintaining and improving Mother Kevin’s work. May Mother Kevin’s legacy live long. Like Mother Mary, we acknowledge that the Almighty has done great things for us, Holy is His name. Lk 1:49. My God and My All.
